This Garden Pond Is the Perfect DIY Project

There is nothing quite like spending time in the garden, especially when the weather is just right. Enjoying the beauty of the world around us and taking some time to relax is something that many of us need after a difficult day. Additions to the garden should focus on your relaxation, and nothing is more relaxing than water.

If you think having a backyard pond is out of your reach, you might be surprised with how easy it is to do and how inexpensive it can be. As a matter of fact, you can build this backyard pond in a weekend and the cost is going to be only $30! The only thing you need to do is gather the supplies and put in a little bit of elbow grease.

Gather your supplies together for this project. It doesn’t require any extensive planning, just make sure you have the following on hand:

Rubbermaid Storage Container
Fountain Pump
A Few Concrete Pavers
Rocks and Stones
Water Plants

1. Choose Your Location

One important step that should not be overlooked is to take the time to choose the proper location. It should have plenty of space for the storage container and lots of sunlight. that is preferred that you have access to power nearby, but otherwise, you can purchase a solar powered water pump. Be sure you are not near any gas or electric lines before you start digging!

2. Add the Rocks

After burying the Rubbermaid container, begin placing your rocks and the pump in place.

3. Lay Your Pavers

The pavers should be laid out along the edge of the container to hide the edge and cover it. If you have any power cord running to a nearby power supply, you can use the pavers and any stones left over to cover the cord.

4. Lay down the Stones to Design the Perfect Look.

5. Add the Water Plants

The plant container can be covered with any left over rocks. This will also help to keep it in position.

6. Finish the Project

Take care of any necessary finishing touches, including adding water to the pump and adjusting your pump settings. Those settings are often going to be a matter of personal preference.

This is what you should have when you are finished!

There is going to be some maintenance to this project. You should plan on cleaning the water feature regularly and use some form of algae inhibitor in the water as is directed. Since you are using a pump to move water with a water feature, mosquitoes should not be a problem.

Make Your Own Adorable Pom-Pom Carpet

There are a few things I look for when starting any project. First of all, I want to make sure that it’s easy enough so that I can actually complete it. Secondly, I try to choose something that the entire family can help me with, including the grandchildren. Since there is no sewing or knitting needles required for this project, it was a shoe in for me.

It may take a little bit of time to create what you want to create, but it is a lot of fun getting there. The fact of the matter is, you can do it on the weekend while sitting in front of the TV or you can do it as a standalone project, because it really gives your mind freedom while you are working on it. In any case, you will end up with a beautiful new rug that will be cozy for any room where you place it.

The first thing you need to do is to pick up enough yarn for the project. Of course, you will need to choose according to the size of the project and you will need to choose the colors that you want. In reality, that is one of the things that is so great about this project, you can spin it in any direction you like. It can either be the centerpiece of a new room or you can match your existing decor.

After you have the yarn and are home in a comfortable chair, take the yarn and wrap it around three of your fingers. You want to continue to wrap the yarn until you have the size pom-pom that you want. You can get a general idea for the size of the pom-pom by looking at how thick the yarns ball is on your fingers.

After getting it to the right size, slip the end of the yard through the middle of the spool where your fingers are, and tie a knot.

Slip it off of your fingers and pull the knot tighter, making a secondary knot at this time. Cut the end of the yarn but leave several inches as a tail, because you will need it later.

Cut the ball of yarn so that it frays in every direction.

After you cut it, it should look something like this. If yarn pieces went flying in every direction, you did something wrong when cutting it.

Work with the yarn until you have a fuzzy ball. You should then trim the edges of the fray down so that they are all even. Don’t get too technical at this point in the game. It has a lot to do with personal preference, and there is no wrong way to do it.

Now that you have your first pom-pom created, continue to create more until you have enough of the pom-poms to make the entire rug. This may take some time but consider it a labor of love!

After you have enough pom-poms, start tying them to each other using the tails that you left when creating them.

Tie them together to create any shape you like!

You can also create patterns out of the different colors you used for the pom-poms.

When you are finished, it is going to be so adorable you won’t believe it!

Tired of Losing Socks? This DIY Project Will Help!

Laundry is something that all of us must do on a regular basis but one of the more frustrating parts of laundry is finding only one sock when the load is done! We instantly begin retracing our steps, wondering if the other sock is stuck in a pants leg or if we perhaps dropped it. Some people even go back to what their parents or grandparents said, that the dryer ate socks!

Although we may never find the answer to this question that life poses, there is something we can do to reduce the issue significantly. When you see this adorable and rather clever DIY project, you will rush to do it for yourself.

The first thing you need to do is gather your supplies.

1 Craft Board
Vinyl Lettering approximately 3” tall reading SINGLE in block print Connected Wood Letters in an artsy font measuring approximately 1/8″ thick and 4″ tall and reading “And Looking” Craft paint in the color of your choice
1 Foam paint brush
1 Small bristle brush
Some craft glue
6 clothespins (big enough to hold your socks, but small enough they don’t overtake the board)

This is where your creative side comes in. Use the foam paint brush to paint the board in whatever color you like. Most people opt for a darker color, and you may need to give it a second coat to make it look professional. Don’t forget to cover the area underneath the board so you don’t make a mess!

Allow the board to dry thoroughly and then remove the back of the vinyl lettering. Center the letters from the board and press down. Peel the masking off to reveal the letters.

You should now paint your wooden letters using the smaller brush. Take your time and be happy with the end product!

Look for your handy hot glue gun to connect the letters to the board. You should also use the hot glue gun to connect the clothespins to the board. Space them out evenly. If you just put them on the board at random, it will show.

All done! Not only is this project cute and fun, it is also quite useful. Rather than putting the sock back in the dryer or even worse, in your drawer will it will frustrate you further, just hang this near board the hamper and grab the other half of the pair as they go into the wash.

She Cuts Her Door and and Then Turns It into THIS!

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of a door? Like most people, you probably think of something that separates rooms, gives you some privacy or perhaps protects you from people outside. When this Linda saw a door, however, she saw something much more to it!

It started when she took an old door off its hinges and decided to make it into something useful. Of course, she has a knack for craftiness but by following her example, you can make something quite interesting for yourself. All it really takes is a little bit of time, the right tools and some determination.

After carefully measuring the door, she cut it in half vertically. She then formed a 90 degree angle by attaching the two pieces at the line where they were cut.

Linda then added 4 shelves, which she also cut to fit the door. She even found an old vintage replica doorknob to add some ambiance to the finished project.

Two cans of spray paint were required to turn a fairly ordinary looking white door into a beautiful blue masterpiece. You can truly see the difference the paint made in the before and after photographs.

Adding the right things to the shelves for decoration also made quite a difference.

Linda talks about the project in a blog post.

“I love this piece! It’s so cool and I still get loads of compliments on it. I think it would be cool to get different old doors and turn them into shelves like this. Think of all the cool door designs! So many possibilities.”

She is absolutely right. You are only limited by your imagination and it takes only small changes to truly customize the project for your needs.

One of the best things about this project is that it is perfect for homes that may have limited space. If you want something interesting to do for your home, even if it is small, this is a great place to start.

9 Tricks To Recycle Old Pill Bottles

More and more, people are becoming concerned about the environment and they think about the rubbish they take to the curb, as it will eventually end up in the landfill. Even if you recycle some of your larger items, there are many smaller items that still find their way into the trash can.

Something that many of us throw away on a monthly basis are empty prescription pill bottles. Rather than taking them out to the curb, you can use them in a number of interesting ways. By doing so, you are not only helping to save the environment, you are providing convenience for your household. Here are our 9 favorite ways to use old pill bottles.

1. Mini Emergency Kit

Although it is a good idea to have a full-size emergency kit, a pill bottle gives you the opportunity to carry some essentials with you. You can include some of the following in the kit, a few Band-Aids, tweezers, aluminum foil, money, Q-tips, safety pins, para cord, fire straws, birthday candles, alcohol wipes and a few pills.

2. Start a Fire

When you need to start a fire in an emergency, you can carry what is necessary in an old pill bottle. Cotton balls and petroleum jelly make wonderful kindling. You can learn how to do it here.

3. Store Buttons

Pill bottles just happen to be the perfect size for storing buttons. You can keep a variety of buttons in a single pill bottle or, as they accumulate, you can separate them by colors, sizes or types. You can also glue buttons to the lid as an easy reference.

4. Gift Boxes

Attach some wrapping paper to the sides of the old pill bottle and decorate the top with some embellishments and you have an awesome miniature gift box. It’s perfect for a small trinket, bracelet or even for giving somebody some cash.

5. Cookies

No, you are not going to bake the cookies inside of the pill bottle but you can use the pill bottle to cut them to the perfect miniature size! After they have cooled, you can even fill a few bottles with the small cookies and give them as a gift.

6. Coin Purse

Admittedly, this isn’t really a purse but you get the general idea. Pill bottles are the perfect size for stacking coins and keeping them organized. You can save your coins at home in this way or carry a pill bottle with some coins in your purse.

7. Cosmetics

Keep your cosmetic counter as neat as a pin with old pill bottles. You can use them for organizing and storing everything from eyeliner to mascara and lipstick. You can also spray paint the bottle or decorate it to give your cosmetic counter a chic look

8. Hide a Key

Superglue a rock to the lid of a prescription bottle and put a spare key inside. Bury the bottle near the door and no one will have any idea it is there.

9. Travel Container

Pill bottles make the perfect storage containers for conditioner, shampoo, bobby pins, Q-tips, lotions, jewelry, vitamins and many other smaller items when you’re taking a day trip or even going out for a few days. Be sure to check with the airlines before you try to board a plane with these items.

Bonus Item

10. Measure Laundry Detergent

Measure your own detergent and save lots of money. The instructions on the laundry detergent bottles tell you to use twice as much as you really need so you buy more. Pill bottles will save you money!

How to Use Crayons in a Hot Glue Gun

Anyone who is serious about crafting recognizes that the hot glue gun is an essential tool. They can be used for so many different purposes and are one of the more versatile, yet simple items that you likely have in your toolbox. Although you have likely used glue guns many times in the past, you probably have never used them like this!

If you were thinking that hot glue sticks were the only thing that could be used in a hot glue gun, you really need to check this out. Not only are crayons fun to use in a hot glue gun, they are the perfect size to fit. When you use a crayon, they melt just like wax and something amazing happens.

Some people have been doing “crayon art” for years but it is typically done by laying out whole crayons or cut crayons on the sheet and then melting them with a lighter or hairdryer. Now that you know the easy way to melt crayons in a hot glue gun, you can enjoy this pastime as well and let your creativity shine.

The first thing you should do is decide what you want to create on the canvas. Pick out the colors in advance to make sure you have enough available.

Go grab your hot glue gun. More than likely, it is still out from your last project. You will hear some warnings that a crayon will ruin a hot glue gun, but it is really just a matter of cleaning the gun after you use it. If you are worried about ruining your hot glue gun, just use an old one until you are comfortable with the process.

Unwrap the first crayon that you plan on using and put it in the glue gun.

Now it is time to let your creative juices flow. Don’t go by any set standard of rules, just let the colors land on the canvas in front of you. To make tight lines or circles, keep the glue gun close to the canvas. As you pull the glue gun away, the lines will get wider and it will tend to spray. The closer you are to the canvas, the more control you have.

Since this piece of art is more about color than placement, we were able to test things nicely and use the glue gun both close and far from the canvas.

Although there are many different types of mediums that can be used for creating on the canvas, crayons add something unique. Not only is the color interesting, the texture that is added by the crayon when it dries adds an interesting dimension.

This type of project can be a little messy, especially when you first try it. Make sure you work in an area that can get a little dirty.

After you’re finished creating, let it dry and find a place to show off your masterpiece.

Family Turns Old Wood Pallets into an Amazing Floor

When most of us think about wood pallets, we really don’t give them a second thought. Of course, there are some great DIY projects that use pallets, but most of them use one or perhaps two pallets at the most. For the following project, a family saved wood pallets for months and when they were finished, something absolutely incredible was created.

Rather than making a planter for outside or perhaps a makeshift table, they collected wood pallets until they had enough suitable slats to upgrade to wood floors in their kitchen and dining room! It may sound simplistic, but just wait to you see the results.
